Section 21 – Junior And Teen Fair

Competition Details

Work must be entered in the proper age group (as of date of entry) and must be the work of the current year. One entry per competition class. Exhibitors will be required to complete a Junior &/or Teen Fair Entry Form and a tag for each entry. These will be available at the libraries and we’ll try to leave some at each Caledon school so you can obtain and fill them out before fair time. If you are unable to pick up your entries yourself, please make prior arrangements for someone to do so by showing the committee members the Exhibitor’s Number card given out at entry time.

 

Junior Fair High Point Award: $20.00: To the Junior Fair Exhibitor age 6 to 12 earning the most points.

 

Junior Fair Entries Award    $20.00 for ages 6-12 for the most entries submitted (at least 5 entries).

  1. Violet Barrett Memorial Junior Baker Award:

Open to everyone 6-12 years old as of date of entry. Award will be presented at opening ceremonies on Saturday. Each of the following items will be presented on a sturdy disposable plate, covered individually with plastic, no paper liner cups and no mixes to be used. All to be displayed attractively on a tray, overall attractiveness to count in evaluation. 3 chocolate chip muffins, 1 mini  banana bread loaf and 3 oatmeal cookies.

Prizes 1st$20.00, 2nd$10.00,3rd $5.00, 4th$3.00, 5th$2.00.

 

 

Junior Fair Photo competition

Prizes: 1st $3.00, 2nd $2.00, 3rd and all others: $1.00

 

Photographs must be 6 and mounted on 6×8 white Bristol board with entry tag secured with tape or staple to the top right-hand corner. Age Group should be4x listed on the tag. Prizes will be awarded for each age group (under 5, 6&7, 8 to 10, 11 &12).

  1. Pet or animal photo
  2. A Flower in bloom.
  3. Black and White- any subject
  4. Smiles
  5. Photograph taken by exhibitor depicting a sporting event- mounted
  6. Four photographs taken by exhibitor depicting the Caledon fair (does not need to be the same subject in each), must be mounted together on a piece of Bristol board.

 

Junior Fair

 

AGE 5 AND UNDER

Prizes: 1st $3.00, 2nd $2.00, 3rd and all others: $1.00

 

  1. Print your first name on an 8 1/2 by 11 inch page.
  2. Trace your foot on a sheet of Construction paper and decorate it.
  3. 6 treasures from a nature walk displayed on a paper plate.
  4. Print the initial of your first name on a 6 inch paper plate, then glue seeds on it.
  5. Grow grass seeds in a paper cup.
  6. 3 healthy real food snacks for your own lunch displayed on a plate and covered with a clear plastic bag.
  7. A creative piece of artwork, not listed, made by child with no help (can be a twig, macaroni, etc.)
  8. A crayon coloured page from a colouring book

 

AGES 6 AND 7

Prizes: 1st $3.00, 2nd $2.00, 3rd and all others: $1.00

  1. Vegetable(s) Dressed as a Farm Animal- 1st $3.00. 2nd$2.00, 3rd-7th $1.00 Sponsored by Pam Graham.
  2. Decorate a ball cap with the fair theme “Seed to Table”
  3. School project of your choice.
  4. Create a wagon out of lego.
  5. Make a Fair Theme Collage (Seed to Table) from at least 3 different pictures.
  6. Make a healthy snack for a farmer. Display it on a paper plate inside a plastic bag.
  7. Any art work, any medium.
  8. Make a picture of a barn, using various seeds glued onto a piece of heavy card stock or cardboard (22cm x 28cm)
  9. Decorate a pine cone to look like a flower in a pot.
  10. Any article made from duct tape.

 

AGES 8 to 10

Prizes: 1st $3.00, 2nd $2.00, 3rd and all others: $1.00

  1. School project of your choice.
  2. Make a scarecrow using an old broom.
  3. Decorate a hat with the fair theme (Seed to Table).
  4. Using a Rice Krispy recipe, create a wagon on a paper plate or foil pie plate. Attach your recipe to your plate
  5. Make a sock puppet to be used as a dog “tug toy”
  6. Make a kite.
  7. Construct a farm animal from Lego.
  8. Any art work, any medium
  9. 933. Make a picture of fireworks (may be decorated with glitter or sequins) max size 22 x 28cm
  10. Make a friendship bracelet.

 

AGES 11 and 12

Prizes: 1st $3.00, 2nd $2.00, 3rd and all others: $1.00

  1. School Project of your choice.
  2. Make a kite using at least 5 basic colours on a firm base.
  3. Create a pine cone animal.
  4. List as many towns and villages in Caledon as you know, penmanship and spelling to count.
  5. Three rhubarb cupcakes decorated for an end of school party. Attractively displayed on a sturdy disposable plate covered with plastic wrap or a clear plastic bag.
  6. Make a quilt by gluing coloured pieces of paper in patterns using the fair theme.( Seed to Table)
  7. Spring Bouquet in a properly sized container. Name at least 3 of the flowers in your bouquet.
  8. Any art work, any medium.
  9. Any sewing project.
  10. Teddy Bear Special– In memory of Mary Glassford- Dress a Teddy Bear in our Theme. (Seed to Table). Sponsored by Betty Brander. Teddy Bear can be store bought, props can be used. Max 24” in any dimension. Judged on creativity only. 1st $10.00. 2nd $8.00, 3rd $5.00, 4th $2.00.

 

 

TEEN FAIR- Ages 13 to 17 (as of date of entry).

Prizes: 1st $3.00, 2nd $2.00, 3rd and all others: $1.00

Teen Fair High Point Award Sponsored by Marnie Graham and Family $20.00 for the Teen obtaining the most points in their Teen Fair classes.

Teen Fair High Entries Award:  $20.00 for the Teen entering the most exhibits (minimum 5)

All baking entries are to be on sturdy paper plates and covered with clear plastic wrap or clear plastic bag.

 

  1. Something useful using recycled material.

946   Colour one (1) page from an adult colouring book.

  1. Using a mason jar, make a “Snow Globe” for fall or winter with at least 3 different animals. (seal securely)
  2. Make a kite.
  3. Article of sewing, hand or machine.
  4. Home-made computer invitation card using the fair theme (Seed to Table).
  5. Fabric painted t-shirt or tank top with the fair theme (Seed to Table).
  6. A care basket for a senior.
  7. Write your favourite poem, penmanship and spelling to count.
  8. Any article made from duct tape.
  9. Wood crafted article.
  10. Create a bouquet of weeds, garden flowers and/or flowering shrubs, naming at least 5 different flowers.
  11. Any article made from dryer fluff.
  12. A bird house, not from a kit.
  13. Any needlework project- not framed.

 

  1. Teen Baker Award– Sponsored by Chris Richie/Remax In The Hills Inc. Open to students ages 13-17 as of date of entry. Award to be presented on Showmobile on Saturday during Opening Ceremonies. All Items to be displayed on a paper or foil plate and covered individually on a tray. No paper liners and no mixes. Neatness and attractiveness of display to count in overall evaluation. Make each of the following;1 Lemon Mini Loaf, 4 Rhubarb squares, 4 chocolate covered strawberries, 4 chocolate chip cookies. 1st-20.00, 2nd $10.00, 3rd$5.00, 4th$3.00, 5th 2.00.

 

 

Teen Fair Photo Competition

Photographs must be 4×6 and mounted on 6×8 white Bristol board with entry tag secured with tape or staple to the top right hand corner. Age Group should be listed on the tag. Prizes will be awarded for  age group (13-17).

  4. Vacation photo with action.
  5. Photograph taken by exhibitor depicting a sporting event- mounted together on Bristol board or card stock.
  6. Four photographs taken by exhibitor depicting the Caledon fair (does not need to be the same subject in each), must be mounted.

 

OAAS AND CAS YOUTH COMPETITIONS

 

  1. Essay contest Juniors and Teens– Open to exhibitors under 17 years as of date of entry. Titled “What Agriculture Means to Me”. Min. 200 words, Max. 500. 1st$10.00 plus gift certificate from Book Lore in Orangeville. All other worthy entries receive $5.00. State age of author. Sponsored by Lisa Graham. Judged on content, neatness, spelling and creativity.

 

Youth Poster Competition Create an Original Hand Drawn Poster Promoting the Caledon Fair.

Prizes: 1st $5.00, 2nd $3.00, 3rd $2.00, and all others: $1.00

 

  1. Youth Poster exhibitor up to Grade 4.
  2. Youth Poster exhibitor Grades 5-8.
  3. Youth Poster exhibitor Grades 9-12.

Min 81/2×11 (23x28cm) Max 11×17” (28x44cm) without border. Mounted on cardstock or Bristol Board with 2” (5cm) border. Theme 2025: “Seed to Table” Include date and location for the 2025 Caledon Fair, June 13, 14 and 15. Print Name and school on the back of the entry tag.

 

  1. O.A.A.S. Plain Chocolate Chip Cookie Contest-

The Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies offers a competition, open to youth ages up to 15 years, for the best Chocolate Chip Cookies. The winner of our fair then may compete at the District level. Each District winner then bakes their best batch of cookies to compete at Provincial level to become the OAAS Youth Chocolate Chip Cookie champion.

Rules- 8 chocolate chip cookies without nuts made by the exhibitor and displayed on a firm disposable plate in a clear plastic bag with entry tag firmly attached to the outside. Cookies max 3”, min 21st$5.00, 2nd$4.00, 3rd $3.00,4th-6th$2.00.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

750ml all-purpose flour

5ml baking soda

4ml salt

250ml butter or margarine

250ml brown sugar

250ml white sugar

2 eggs

10ml vanilla

500 ml semisweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 375degrees F

  1. Put oven racks to upper middle position.
  2. Lightly grease cookie sheet.
  3. In a medium size bowl combine flour, baking soda and salt. Mix well.
  4. In a large bowl combine butter/margarine and sugars, Beat in the eggs and vanilla until creamy.
  5. Add flour mixture to the creamed mixture and beat to mix well.
  6. Stir in chocolate chips.
  7. Drop dough by small spoonful onto prepared cookie sheet leaving 10cm between each cookie.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until golden.
  9. Immediately place cookies onto cooling racks.
  10. When completely cooled, store in an airtight container.
